Winter Sports on the Wilder Kaiser
The Wilder Kaiser is Austria's largest interconnected ski area
The ski world lies at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser in the Kitzbühel Alps and can be reached via the Hartkaiser railway, which is only 400 metres away from our hotel, within walking distance. The most modern snowmaking facilities covering about two-thirds of the total of 279 km of ski slopes provide maximum snow safety. But the varied après ski and winder leisure activitis in Ellmau leave no wish unfulfilled. Ellmau – a right royal skiing pleasure!
The new 10-seater gondola
A new dimension in comfort, service and speed
After 44 years of service and carrying 34 million passengers, time is being called on the old Hartkaiser funicular railway. The old funicular railway is being replaced with an ultra-modern 10-seater extra-large gondola lift exploiting every aspect of the latest lift technology. The new Hartkaiserbahn will be one of the most modern cable cars in the world!
In less than nine minutes passengers will be transported from Ellmau to a height of 1,530 metres. The total length is more than 2.1 kilometres with an altitude gain of 703 metres. Another completely new feature will be the possibility of boarding and alighting in the newly built intermediate station. It will now be able to transport 3,200 people an hour, twice the previous capacity of 1,500; all the cabins provide disabled access and are equipped with Wi-Fi and heated seats for the ascent and descent and, with a particularly long access platform (eight metres longer than before), will provide comfortable and relaxed boarding with no pushing and shoving – the advantages of which families with small children in particular will appreciate.
Off the slopes
Besides the fun on the slopes, the resort offers many other activities such as curling, ice stick shooting, tobogganing, snowshoeing and sleigh rides. Other pluses are the uniquely beautiful surroundings, easy accessibility from Germany, a favourable climate and, of course, the typical Tyrolean hospitality.
TOBOGGANING ON THE WILDER KAISER
Experience the ultimate in tobogganing fun on the natural and excellently maintained toboggan runs in the Wilder Kaiser region. The region offers a total of more than 12 kilometres, split between four family friendly toboggan runs, partly with snow-making facilities.
Whether on romantic forest trails, as at Going on Tannbichl, or with a racy descent on the 4.5km Astberg toboggan run, tobogganing fans can have fantastic fun on the foothills of the Wilder Kaiser or on the forested slopes of the Northern Kitzbühl Alps.
WINTER HIKING
Enjoy a winter hiking tour on over 140 kilometres of specially maintained and marked winter hiking trails in the Wilder Kaiser region. With its sunny valleys, nestling between the foothills of the Kitzbühl Alps and the gently climbing slopes of the Wilder Kaiser massif, it's an attractive place for extended winter walks and hikes.
Particular popular in the Wilder Kaiser region is the winter guided walk with Tyrolean mountain guide Peter to the acclaimed film locations used in the German TV series "Der Bergdoktor".
Also very popular with both visitors and locals is the winter walk at Going - "Der Wilde Kaiser erzählt" - a fantastic hike taking you through the peaceful and glistening snow-covered landscape.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Cross-country skiing on gently rolling hills at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountain. On the sunny levels between the four local centres of Going, Ellmau, Scheffau and Söll, beginners and advanced cross-country skiers can make use of excellently prepared cross-country skiing trails.
Cross-country skiing in Austria is also as varied as the landscape around the Wilder Kaiser. Sports enthusiasts will not only find trails for classic cross-country skiing, but also ones for agile cross-country skating.
What's more, in Scheffau there is also the possibility of doing cross-country in the evening: on the floodlit evening cross-country trail in Scheffau.
SNOWSHOE TREKKING
Experience the glistening snow of the Wilder Kaiser region - ideally by snowshoe hiking on untouched trails in the Alps.
Depending on which terrain and walking pace you choose, snowshoe trekking can be both leisurely fun for the whole family and a high-performance sport for adventurous daredevils.
SKI TOURING
With ski touring you can experience the breathtaking & unforgettable side of the Tyrolean Alps. The unspoilt snow-covered winter landscape at Wilder Kaiser or in the Kitzbühl Alps is impressive due to the sheer tranquillity and fantastic views. Experience a sense of freedom and lightness with a descent on powder snow or in firn!
Guided tours are offered for beginners and those unfamiliar with the area. Individual ski touring adventures can be best enjoyed with a fully qualified local mountain and skiing guide from the Wilder Kaiser Tourist Board, who will guide you safely through the valley and up to the summit.
ICE-SKATING IN THE KITZBÜHL ALPS
Glide across the ice in the great outdoors with the dazzling backdrop of the Alps - on the ice rinks in Going and Söll. Leave the daily routine behind you and breathe the clear winter air - together with the whole family: whilst the little ones practice ice-skating with special ice-penguins and the older kids skate circuits or have fun playing ice-hockey, you can enjoy the holiday with a mug of Glühwein.
HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDE
Enjoy the beautiful countryside with a trip by horse-drawn carriage. Explore attractive places such as Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll on a trip through the Wilder Kaiser region.
